About Carlos Leyva                           Page 1 of 6

I was born August 17, 1961 in the city of Santa Barbara, CA. I have three older brothers and three younger sisters. My father passed away many years ago; I have no idea how long ago it was because I have no reason to celebrate that day. My mother is still alive, and she resides in the same house in Santa Barbara that I grew up in. I never cared for school much. Growing up in a family of nine created many difficult situations, especially getting ready for school in the mornings and only having one bathroom in the house. I was very fortunate that my parents were able to purchase a house, and I never had to live in an apartment or rent a house, as many families do. Even though we lived in Santa Barbara, we were not wealthy by any means. In fact, I still remember getting used toys for Christmas one year, and my mom driving us to the local government center to pick up free government surplus food. Food stamps and powdered milk was just a part of my childhood. My family was fortunate to be able to enroll in the free lunch programs at our schools. A couple years we even got to get free clothes from a local charity so that we could have fresh clothes for the first days of school. In many ways, we were raised poor, but by no means am I complaining. That was just the way it was.
